Photoessay: The South Mississippi Adoption Picnic

The South Mississippi Adoption Picnic is a one-day event for prospective adoptive parents to meet children in need of families. Images were published by HBO, Telegraph Magazine, and Channel 4 (London).

This assignment involved shooting at several locations, in addition to the picnic, over a period of two days. I met with prospective adoptive couples, families who adopted children they'd met at a previous year's picnic, and with older children who would be attending the picnic but weren't likely to be adopted. The day of the event itself was hectic, with many storylines to cover. It was quite a challenge. Most kids seemed to be having fun at the picnic. But there were elements of both sadness and hope, as some children met potential families, and other kids seemed to be looked over.
